SUMMARY:World Urban Forum
DESCRIPTION:The Ninth Session of the World Urban Forum will be the first session to focus on the implementation of the New Urban Agenda adopted in Habitat III. WUF9 will be instrumental to substantively feed into the inputs for the first report of the implementation of the New Urban Agenda (which are also fully aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals). \nThe New Urban Agenda comes in at a critical moment\, when the first time in history over half of the world’s population is residing in cities. Cities\, if planned and managed well\, will become the main tool for sustainable development and has a potential to be a solution to many of the challenges our planet is facing today. The New Urban Agenda lays out the vision for future cities based on the science of urban development providing tools in crucial areas.

SUMMARY:Peoples' State of the Union
DESCRIPTION:In January of most years\, the President delivers a State of the Union Address highlighting the past year and suggesting priorities for the coming year. It’s a broadcast from one to many. But democracy is a conversation\, not a monologue. Understanding the state of our union takes We the People reflecting in our own communities on our challenges and opportunities locally\, nationally\, and globally. \nSince 2015\, the USDAC has hosted the People’s State of the Unionas an invitation to supplement the President’s stories by coming together in our own homes\, schools\, houses of worship\, and community organizations to share our own take on the state of our union. Thousands of people in more than 350 communities have taken part over the last three years. \nThe People’s State of the Union has two main parts: Story Circles across the nation\, and a collaboratively composed Poetic Address to the Nation. The USDAC offers toolkits and online trainings to support anyone hosting a Story Circle\, bringing people together to share stories from their own experience. Stories are uploaded to an online story portal where they can be shared and browsed. Then—inspired by these stories—an invited group of writers collaboratively composes the Poetic Address to the Nation\, performed and broadcast live. \nFor #PSOTU 2018\, Story Circle participants are invited to share their own take on the state of our union by reflecting on any of the following prompts (or creating their own): \n\nShare a story about an experience that gave you insight into the state of our union.\nShare a story about a time you felt a sense of belonging—or the opposite—to this nation or your community.\nShare a story of an experience that gave you hope in the past year.\n\nThis year\, Story Circles will take place from January 25-February 4\, 2018. SUMMARY:4th World Forum of Local Economic Development
DESCRIPTION:via RIPESS \nThe 4th World Forum of Local Economic Development (LED) will be held at Praia\, Cabo Verde\, from October 17 to 20\, 2017. After previous meetings in Seville\, Spain (2011)\, in Foz do Iguaçu (Brazil) in 2013 and in 2015 in Turin\, Italy. \nThe theme of this year’s meeting is “Local Economic Development as a comprehensive framework to localize the Sustainable Development Goals: addressing rising inequalities“. \nThe theme of the event is totally aligned with a recent announcement by the UN Secretary General António Guterres of the importance of localizing the 2030 Agenda. \nIn 2014\, even before the adoption of the 2030 SDG’S\, in a position paper published by the UN Taskforce\, the 19 UN Agencies involved explicitly recognized the potential of the ESS for sustainable development. Chapter 3 of this document clearly specifies the importance of ESS for LED: \nSSE provides a vision of local development that proactively regenerates and develops local areas through employment generation\, mobilizing local resources\, community risk management and retaining and reinvesting surplus. SSE can serve to widen the structure of a local economy and labour market and addressing unmet needs with various goods and services. It can build trust and social cohesion and play an important role in participatory local governance. SSE principles can introduce added value within the sectors in which they operate owing to SSE’s compatibility with local interests and its capacity to pursue simultaneously several objectives. \nRIPESS decided to get involved last November 4 at the Symposium organized by the Taskforce in Rome. For RIPESS\, LED is important since SSE is rooted in local communities and we fully agree that the SDG’s need to be implemented at the local level. \nSince January\, we have worked with Jacinto Santos from Cape Verde to develop the SSE and LED approach. Jacinto Santos is a member of the national organising commission of the 4th Forum and in 2016\, was host to a first Portuguese speaking SSE conference. A network was created at that occasion. \nRIPESS is also actively working with UN Taskforce Agencies involved as a partner of the 4th Forum\, in particular UNDP and the ILO to assure that the potential of SSE\, one of the six sub-themes of the Forum\, is fully recognized to implement the SDG’s. RIPESS will be an Associate partner for the Forum. \nRIPESS is planning to be represented at the preparatory regional event in Bolivia in June and in a Symposium in July in Cape Verdi to prepare SSE organisations for October.

SUMMARY:Second Financing For Development Forum
DESCRIPTION:The second FfD Forum will be convened by the President of ECOSOC from 22 to 25 May 2017 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. \nBuilding on the inaugural FfD Forum\, which devoted particular attention to setting up the monitoring framework for the follow-up to the Addis Ababa Action Agenda (Addis Agenda)\, the 2017 Forum is expected to provide impetus for the implementation of FfD outcomes and the delivery of means of implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. \nThe 2017 Forum will begin with the ministerial segment\, which\, on 22 May will feature the Special High-Level Meeting with the Bretton Woods institutions\, the World Trade Organization and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. It will provide an opportunity for the heads of international trade and financial institutions as well as their intergovernmental bodies to interact with their United Nations counterparts on issues of common interest in the follow-up to the FfD outcomes. \nThe ministerial round tables\, to be held on 23 May\, will be the main novelty of the 2017 Forum\, responding to the mandate in the Addis Agenda for the FfD follow-up process to promote the sharing of lessons learned from experiences at the national and regional levels. Each round table would bring together a balanced mix of ministers from developed and developing countries\, as well as high-level officials of international organizations and other stakeholders to share their steps taken towards implementation of commitments contained in the Addis Agenda and other FfD outcomes. \nThe 2017 FfD Forum will also provide the opportunity for Member States to express their views through the general debate. It is expected that the intergovernmentally agreed conclusions and recommendations of the Forum will be adopted at the conclusion of the ministerial segment. \nThe expert segment\, which will take place from 24 to 25 May\, will focus on all seven action areas of the Addis Agenda\, as well as other specific issues that Member States mandated the FfD Forum to address. It will also feature a dedicated panel discussion on the IATF report\, a dialogue with stakeholders\, as well as briefing on progress in initiatives mandated by the Addis Agenda or launched at the Third International Conference on Financing for Development.
