DESCRIPTION:Center for Popular Economics‘ Summer Institute is a residential\, week-long intensive training in economics for activists\, educators\, media makers\, and anyone who wants a better understanding of how the economy works. \nThis year’s institute will offer economic tools and analysis to understand the vital challenges of our time like climate change and the racial wealth gap. We will discuss such topics as “free” trade agreements and international finance\, corporate power\, economic and military imperialism\, and global environmental justice. We will also explore existing and proposed alternatives for democratic economic institutions\, fairer trade and migration systems\, and equitable solutions to the climate crisis. \nOur participatory curriculum is led by staff economists from the Center for Popular Economics\, and the format will allow you to benefit from the rich knowledge and experience of other participants. No background in economics is necessary!

SUMMARY:Institute for Advanced Troublemaking
DESCRIPTION:The Institute for Advanced Troublemaking\, an anarchist summer school\, will be held July 21st-July 29\, 2018 in Worcester\, MA. \nWe are a small collective of long time anarchist organizers seeking to create a lasting movement education hub in the Northeast of the so-called US. The I.A.T. seeks to train new and old organizers alike beyond the basics in anarchist theory\, anti-oppression\, direct action tactics and strategic movement building. \nThe I.A.T. aims to raise collective capacity to target our enemies at the systemic level with effective direct action and campaign work. As Trump’s presidency spurs a swell of anarchist organizing and renewed interest in anti-state anti capitalist perspectives\, we want to escalate by building skills in direct action\, creating movement infrastructure\, and community organizing for new anarchists. \nWe also want to bring experienced organizers together to innovate strategies and tactics for our contemporary context. Rather than an activism 101\, our intention is to cultivate deeper understanding and praxis of anarchist organizing among people who are already doing some of that work. \nIn part we are inspired by long lasting radical education projects such as the IWW associated Work People’s College (1907-1941)\, Movement for New Society’s ‘Life Centers’ (1971-1988)\, the Highlander Folk School (1932-present)\, and the Institute for Social Ecology (1974-present). These examples are notable largely for drawing organizers together in order to innovate tactics and strategies for their context- tools that were intentionally injected broadly into radical movement work. These longer form education projects are also notable for their alumni largely remaining life long radicals. \nWhile informal education spaces\, campaign based action camps\, and book fairs are important elements of our struggle they have serious limitations as well. By creating longer form 1-4 session courses the I.A.T hopes to give space and time to go in depth on contemporary anarchist analysis\, theory\, and concrete movement building skills. The I.A.T. is a move towards creating a more rigorous exploration of anarchism that is: \n\nOutside of the purity of radical internet culture\nContemporary to our context\nRooted in social anarchist principles\nDirectly linked to movement struggle\nRooted in Care systems and long haul strategy

DESCRIPTION:Summer Institute 2017 | July 30th – August 5th | Amherst College\nAn intensive residential training\nABOUT | COST & SCHOLARSHIPS | APPLY | FLYER \n\nHow have the economic structures of global capitalism helped to shape our current moment?\nHow do the structures of global capitalism currently function?\nHow can we marshal our understanding into building dignified lives for all?\n\nABOUT \nWe’re living in a global moment of reactionary backlash: fear mongering about immigration\, refugee crises\, climate change denial\, rising nationalism and conservative protectionism. These processes occur against the backdrop of increasing inequality\, division\, and conflict across the globe. At Summer Institute 2017\, we’ll explore the economic structures which have shaped this moment\, and how we can build alternative forms of global economic integration and solidarity. \nOur Summer Institute is a residential\, week long intensive training in economics for activists\, educators\, media makers\, and anyone who wants a better understanding of how the economy works. This year’s special track will offer economic tools and analysis to understand neoliberalism; ‘free’ trade agreements; movements of money\, people\, and goods; economic and military imperialism; and global environmental injustice. We will also explore existing and proposed alternatives for fairer trade and migration systems and equitable solutions to climate change. \nOur analysis takes us beyond harmful myths and tropes\, from ‘they take our jobs\,’ to the notion that jobs come at the expense of the environment\, allowing us to build the broad-based solidarity this moment calls for. Our participatory curriculum is led by staff economists from the Center for Popular Economics\, and the format will allow you to benefit from the rich knowledge and experience of other participants. No background in economics is necessary! \nCOST & SCHOLARSHIPS \nThe full cost of tuition is $900\, which includes housings and meals. For those not requesting overnight accommodations\, the cost is $700. Childcare and Spanish translation will also be available. \nWe have a strong commitment to providing financial assistance to help people attend the Summer Institute. We have a limited scholarship fund\, and we rely heavily on the honest assessment of each participant’s financial situation.
