SUMMARY:#ResistAndBuild Webinar with Cooperation Jackson & Black Lives Matter
DESCRIPTION:Resist and Build\, Fight and Build\, Oppose and Propose\, Resist and Insist – whatever the wording\, there is great convergence about the need to connect these dimensions. Even if the lines are a bit blurry\, we can broadly distinguish between resist work that seeks to fight back against an oppressive\, unjust and unsustainable social/economic system\, and the build work of the solidarity economy that seeks to build ‘another world’ beyond capitalism to one that puts people and planet\, equity\, justice and sustainability front and center. Resistance without knowing where you’re going is likely to lead only to reform of the current system. Building a solidarity economy without being grounded in grassroots organizing runs the risk of losing touch with the struggle that impels the need for a solidarity economy in the first place.\n\n\n\n\nKali Akuno brings a powerful vision and deep analysis that is changing the social and economic fabric of Jackson\, Mississippi. Activists are bringing together resist and build through three spheres of organizing: 1) Cooperation Jackson is building the solidarity economy through cooperative and community controlled enterprises and initiatives\, 2) People’s Assemblies are used to organize the community\, as well as to 3) engage in a political/electoral strategy to take power through local government and grassroots organizing.

Following the greatest single decline in Black homeownership and wealth in the nation’s history\, many families are struggling. She develops markets and opportunities for collaboration between cooperatives and cross-sectoral allies\, including the development of a value chain within the textile and fashion industries. Born and raised in Tampa Bay\, FL to Vietnamese refugee parents\, Anh-Thu earned her BA at Georgetown University and JD at University of Texas School of Law. \n\nMai Nguyen\, US Federation of Worker Cooperatives\nMai serves on the board of the US Federation of Worker Cooperatives. They own and operate an organic farm and were the cooperative development specialist at the California Center for Cooperative Development. Now\, Mai is an organizer for the National Young Farmers Coalition. She serves as Coordinator of the United States Solidarity Economy Network. An economist by training\, Emily served as the Director of the Center for Popular Economics from 2004 to 2013. Prior to that\, Emily taught at Smith College. \nJulia Ho\, Solidarity Economy St Louis\nJulia is the founder of Solidarity Economy St. Louis. During the Ferguson uprising in August 2016\, she worked with Missourians Organizing for Reform and Empowerment (MORE). SUMMARY:Sanctuary Workplace Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Immigrant-led worker cooperatives have been a successful tactic for migrant communities to build power\, build wealth\, and develop member-leaders. However\, the recent political situation is a reminder that migrant workers and other communities remain vulnerable to injustice and disempowerment. This is a call to action to extend protection and safety to all communities facing harassment and persecution in the workplace\, including all people of color\, immigrants\, Muslims\, and people with disabilities. This session will define what expanding sanctuary means\, how this strategy has been utilized over time to create safe and hate-free spaces for everyone\, in particular\, those being persecuted for their immigration status. We will share a new resource guide that has been recently launched by the USFWC and DAWI in collaboration with Urban Justice Center\, where people can obtain information about their rights as worker-owners within the workplace and as individuals/families

SUMMARY:Learning SSE From the Continents
DESCRIPTION:Starting from June 2017\, Pacific Asia Resource Center (PARC) which is a member of ASEC/RIPESS-Asia based in Japan\, will host a webinar series “Learning SSE from the Continents“. \nWhat is it that comes across between movements in EU\, Africa\, Latin America\, North America\, Asia and Japan? \nIn spite of the divers socio-economic situations that these places face\, there is yet a growing movement of social solidarity economy that has something in common. What exactly is the vision that we all share? What are some of the challenges that are shared\, and how can we all work in solidarity; overcoming the contextual differences that we face. \nThis webinar series is aimed at finding hints to these questions by bringing aboard leading SSE practitioners/activists from EU\, North America\, Africa\, Latin America and Asia and listening to the state of SSE movements in their respective continents\, sub-regions\, or specific countries. Most of them are working closely for the Ripess continental network they are belonging to. \nThe aim is to broaden our standing of SSE by understanding better the circumstances of the respective territories and through that to better grasp the Global Vision of SSE that RIPESS has drafted. \nSpeakers will speak to audiences in Japan through video conferencing software\, and consecutive interpretations will be offered only into Japanese from the speakers’. In addition\, some of the speakers will be speakers from Japan who will be only speaking to those physically present in the venue in Tokyo\, Japan. \nHowever\, international participants are welcome to join the webinars through video conferencing software to listen into the speakers give their lectures. The wealth created from the theft of Black peoples and Indigenous land form the foundation of the U.S. economy. \nIn June\, we are launching a National Call to Reclaim land as Black folks to steward and govern as centers of joy\, healing\, and sanctuary. This is a step in co-creating strategies for transformation grounded in a long-term vision\, guided by the resilience and creativity of our ancestry\, and rooted in our sovereignty. \nWe must transfer wealth from where it has been concentrated and used as a weapon against Black bodies\, Indigenous lands\, and the very planet we all depend upon.
