DESCRIPTION:4TH UNION CO-OP SYMPOSIUM\nLiberating Our Futures Together:\nBuilding the Cooperative Ecosystem\nThe international Union Co-op Symposium is a two day conference that brings together over 250 practitioners\, social entrepreneurs\, labor organizers\, co-op workers\, community development practitioners\, and people interested in practical tools on how to start and run union worker cooperatives. CUCI is building on the work of co-ops that have been present in this country for over 200 years\, by using an international model from Mondragon\, Spain. We wish to create a network of cooperatives in our society that serves the collective good by providing economic opportunities and goods and services with a purpose. \nSince 2013\, CUCI has been hosting an international biennial union co-op symposium to grow the union co-op movement. CUCI is one of the premier “living labs” for bringing this model to life in the US. To date\, CUCI has created 5 cooperative entities/organizations\, two cooperative support entities\, and is the prototype union cooperative incubator for the country. The symposium provides practical tools on how to start and run union worker cooperatives. New this year\, we will include how cities can support and incentivize worker ownership and cutting-edge business succession strategies through worker ownership. \n\n\nWHAT SESSIONS ARE WE PREPARING FOR THIS YEAR?\nWe asked attendees and co-op network builders around the country what they wanted to see this year and have been busy putting together another practical\, nuts-and-bolts schedule with plenty of space to learn and connect with others doing the work! \nPanels & Sessions on these topics: \n\neducation & culture building\ngovernance & management\nfinancing\npreparing for the future of work\n\nParticipatory Sessions where people can pick the brains of on-the-ground practitioners\, like Rachel from Co-op Dayton\, who have made great strides on their co-op projects. The State of Platform Cooperativism is the most international gathering of its kind. Following our 2018 conference in Hong Kong\, this much-needed event summons scholars and founders of platform cooperatives — businesses that use a website\, mobile app\, or protocol to sell goods or services while relying on democratic decision-making and shared ownership of the platform by workers and users.  \nPlatform cooperativism is not a fleeting idea but an iterative process that unfolds with the support of community groups and anchor organizations such as universities\, cooperative banks\, and accelerators. Impulses for a democratic digital transformation come from numerous domains\, which is why this event presents theoretical reflections\, artistic provocations\, and insights from on-the-ground workers\, owners\, and users. \nWho Owns the World? convenes one hundred fifty speakers from over thirty countries to meet each other\, co-design\, and learn about topics such as worker power in the platform economy\, antitrust\, misogyny and racism in co-ops\, ecological sustainability\, best practices for cooperation including the allocation of startup funding\, the potential of platform co-ops for data trusts\, data co-ops\, new models for distributed governance\, and data sovereignty. \nWho owns our data\, our cities\, the world? It aims at building solidarity among participants in unions\, worker co-ops and solidarity economies in Canada\, US\, Mexico\, Central America and the Caribbean.  Main hosts are the LF del Centro Cooperativa (now owned by the Sindicato Mexicano de Electricistas) and Mexico’s branch of the Workers’ Economy Network which was born in Buenos Aires in 2007.\n\nGratis registration and submission deadline is October 20 but we ask for early inquiries to help organizers get like-minded folks together.  A sliding-scale fee will be assessed non-Spanish speakers in order to compensate interpreters.

DESCRIPTION:Resist and Build\, Fight and Build\, Oppose and Propose\, Resist and Insist – whatever the wording\, there is great convergence about the need to connect these dimensions. Even if the lines are a bit blurry\, we can broadly distinguish between resist work that seeks to fight back against an oppressive\, unjust and unsustainable social/economic system\, and the build work of the solidarity economy that seeks to build ‘another world’ beyond capitalism to one that puts people and planet\, equity\, justice and sustainability front and center. Resistance without knowing where you’re going is likely to lead only to reform of the current system. Building a solidarity economy without being grounded in grassroots organizing runs the risk of losing touch with the struggle that impels the need for a solidarity economy in the first place.\n\n\n\n\nKali Akuno brings a powerful vision and deep analysis that is changing the social and economic fabric of Jackson\, Mississippi. Activists are bringing together resist and build through three spheres of organizing: 1) Cooperation Jackson is building the solidarity economy through cooperative and community controlled enterprises and initiatives\, 2) People’s Assemblies are used to organize the community\, as well as to 3) engage in a political/electoral strategy to take power through local government and grassroots organizing.

SUMMARY:Institute for Advanced Troublemaking
DESCRIPTION:The Institute for Advanced Troublemaking\, an anarchist summer school\, will be held July 21st-July 29\, 2018 in Worcester\, MA. \nWe are a small collective of long time anarchist organizers seeking to create a lasting movement education hub in the Northeast of the so-called US. The I.A.T. seeks to train new and old organizers alike beyond the basics in anarchist theory\, anti-oppression\, direct action tactics and strategic movement building. \nThe I.A.T. aims to raise collective capacity to target our enemies at the systemic level with effective direct action and campaign work. As Trump’s presidency spurs a swell of anarchist organizing and renewed interest in anti-state anti capitalist perspectives\, we want to escalate by building skills in direct action\, creating movement infrastructure\, and community organizing for new anarchists. \nWe also want to bring experienced organizers together to innovate strategies and tactics for our contemporary context. Rather than an activism 101\, our intention is to cultivate deeper understanding and praxis of anarchist organizing among people who are already doing some of that work. \nIn part we are inspired by long lasting radical education projects such as the IWW associated Work People’s College (1907-1941)\, Movement for New Society’s ‘Life Centers’ (1971-1988)\, the Highlander Folk School (1932-present)\, and the Institute for Social Ecology (1974-present). These examples are notable largely for drawing organizers together in order to innovate tactics and strategies for their context- tools that were intentionally injected broadly into radical movement work. These longer form education projects are also notable for their alumni largely remaining life long radicals. \nWhile informal education spaces\, campaign based action camps\, and book fairs are important elements of our struggle they have serious limitations as well. By creating longer form 1-4 session courses the I.A.T hopes to give space and time to go in depth on contemporary anarchist analysis\, theory\, and concrete movement building skills. The I.A.T. is a move towards creating a more rigorous exploration of anarchism that is: \n\nOutside of the purity of radical internet culture\nContemporary to our context\nRooted in social anarchist principles\nDirectly linked to movement struggle\nRooted in Care systems and long haul strategy

DESCRIPTION:Healing our relationship with land is essential for Black and Brown folks who have faced intergenerational dispossession. Following the greatest single decline in Black homeownership and wealth in the nation’s history\, many families are struggling. DESCRIPTION:On May Day\, 2018\, 500 world-changers in philanthropy\, business\, government and citizen activism will gather in San Francisco to foster the emergence of a new regenerative society\, and a rapid shift from a degenerative economy to one that supports the mutual thriving of people and planet. \nACTION OVER DISCUSSION\nReGen18 will not be another talk-fest\, but a task-force and learning ground with growing real-world impact year-on-year. It will launch a purpose-driven community to share practical tools\, powerful ideas\, new business models and innovative finance mechanisms to accelerate the change we need at the speed of the problems we now face. A roster of well-known experts will guide actionable conversations about regenerative finance\, food and agriculture\, urban design and policy\, health and culture. Regenerative companies and projects will gain validation and support. We will build practical partnerships and functional alliances. \nCROSS-POLLINATION\nDynamic event design will maximize productive interaction. Working groups will converge for “deep dives\,” then share their discoveries and activities with the wider gathering. We’ll hear from pioneers who are devising financial products that can combat onrushing climate change while generating prosperity in indigenous communities. We’ll explore how to produce nutritious food and increase biodiversity while “drawing down” CO2 into the living soil. We will meet leaders of regenerative natural products companies and family farms\, and learn about achievable ways to transform landscapes and seascapes. We will explore how cities can enhance the environment rather than depleting it; how buildings can produce clean energy\, air\, and water while storing excess carbon; and how urban transformation connects with local wealth creation through entrepreneurship in marginalized neighborhoods.

SUMMARY:Co-operative Education and Research Conference 2018
DESCRIPTION:The 2018 Co-operative Education and Research Conference takes place on 1-2 May at Federation in Manchester – and will explore what ‘learning to do and learning to be’ look like today. \n“In the 19th Century\, the Rochdale Pioneers asked co-operators to learn how to ‘do’ – so that they could run successful businesses able to compete against capitalist enterprises\, and how to ‘be’– so that they developed values\, behaviours and solidarities essential to making the co-operative economy sustainable\,” said a statement from the Co-operative College\, which organises the event. \nUsing this as a starting point\, the conference will have two main strands: The Co-operative University; and Learning for New Co-operative Times. Over the two days there will be panels discussions\, workshops and the presentation of papers. The College is now calling for proposals that fit in either strand. \nThe idea for a Co-operative University was explored at a session at the 2017 Co-operative Congress\, where Dr Cilla Ross\, Co-operative College vice-principal\, argued that the university as we know it “is in crisis” – and that the establishment of a co-operative university was a logical next step. \nThe Education and Research Conference will continue this debate around co-operative pedagogy and ‘open’ education; co-op learning in communities; and co-op skills for the new world of work. The Learning for Co-operative Times strand will explore the social and solidarity economy; new opportunities for co-operation; and global perspectives\, among others. \nIn an era when the co-operative movement offers an “accountable\, people-centred and values-driven alternative to the mainstream capitalist model”\, the conference will “debate how ready the existing movement is to deal with new challenges”– and will look at the skills needed by people and organisations to develop sustainable\, alternative organisations”. \nIt will also also explore how the co-operative movement “can cope with\, respond to and pre-empt the extraordinary technology-driven changes which are recasting our cultural understanding of how we live\, communicate and work” \nThe deadline for 300 words abstracts is 14 February 2018. Notifications of acceptance will be sent on 7 March 2018. She develops markets and opportunities for collaboration between cooperatives and cross-sectoral allies\, including the development of a value chain within the textile and fashion industries. Born and raised in Tampa Bay\, FL to Vietnamese refugee parents\, Anh-Thu earned her BA at Georgetown University and JD at University of Texas School of Law. \n\nMai Nguyen\, US Federation of Worker Cooperatives\nMai serves on the board of the US Federation of Worker Cooperatives. They own and operate an organic farm and were the cooperative development specialist at the California Center for Cooperative Development. Now\, Mai is an organizer for the National Young Farmers Coalition. SUMMARY:CTRLshift: An Emergency Summit for Change 2018
DESCRIPTION:This week hundreds of activists will gather in Wigan for ‘CTRLshift: An Emergency Summit For Change’ – a three day conference exploring the uncertainties and opportunities of our times\, convened by around 20 grassroots\, social change organisations. \nKicking off on Tuesday 27 March\, the event will bring together activists\, organisers\, and entrepreneurs to develop a shared agenda to shift power over our democracy\, economy and environment\, from Westminster and multinational corporations\, to people and communities across Britain. By bringing these solutions together and mobilising people for local and regional action\, the organisers hope to make ‘taking back control’ a positive reality. As the conference summary explains: \n“Our departure from the European Union is a moment of significant disruption and presents us with an unparalleled opportunity to reshape the future. We believe that the best way to effect change is to bring together those working to reform the system with those actively building practical radical alternatives on the ground.” \nOver the course of the conference participants will hear from a wide range of organisations and speakers and spend time discussing challenges\, examining possible solutions\, and exploring opportunities for collaboration. There will also time for socialising\, networking and live performances. DESCRIPTION:Our first of five part webinar series will present the framework of solidarity economics\, its history and contemporary practice\, and its examples in Asian American immigrant and refugee communities. \nSpeakers: \nEmily Kawano\, US Solidarity Economy Network\nEmily is the co-director of the Wellspring Cooperative Corporation which seeks to create an engine for new\, community-based job creation in Springfield\, MA. She serves as Coordinator of the United States Solidarity Economy Network. An economist by training\, Emily served as the Director of the Center for Popular Economics from 2004 to 2013. Prior to that\, Emily taught at Smith College. \nJulia Ho\, Solidarity Economy St Louis\nJulia is the founder of Solidarity Economy St. Louis. During the Ferguson uprising in August 2016\, she worked with Missourians Organizing for Reform and Empowerment (MORE). For the past two and a half years\, Julia has been building a network of businesses\, organizations\, and individuals fighting for a just and sustainable economy. \nFacilitators: \nYvonne Yen Liu\, Solidarity Research Center\nYvonne is the co-founder and research director of Solidarity Research Center\, a worker self-directed nonprofit that advances solidarity economies. She serves on the board of the US Solidarity Economy Network and was named the 2018 Activist-in-Residence Fellow at the UCLA Asian American Studies Center. \nParag Rajendra Khandhar\, Asian American Solidarity Economies Project\nParag is a founding principal of Gilmore Khandhar\, LLC\, a law firm focused on legal\, policy\, and advocacy tools to advance economic justice\, racial equity\, and social transformation. He teaches at George Washington University Law School. Parag co-founded Baltimore Activating Solidarity Economies (BASE) and the Asian American Solidarity Economies Network (AASE). \nAsian American Solidarity Economies is a project of Solidarity Research Center in partnership with UCLA Asian American Studies Center and National CAPACD.

SUMMARY:Community Control of Land
DESCRIPTION:What does community control of land mean to you and your organization? We talk a lot about community control of land as we try to envision a world where decisions of land are not driven merely by speculation and forces of exclusion. But who is the community? What level of control do they exercise? Toward what end? \nShelterforce is seeking short essays on this topic (200-500 words). Your essays can explore this from one of two angles: either how your community or organization already answers these questions in practice\, or how community control of land ought to work\, even if you don’t have an example yet. \nEssays may be published online\, in print\, or both. We may follow up with questions or requests to expand certain points. Essays are due Feb. 21\, 2018 and can be emailed to articles@shelterforce.org. We are also seeking high-resolution (minimum 1600 pixels wide) photos that represent community control of land.

SUMMARY:Alternative Media and Social Solidarity Economy
DESCRIPTION:The second European meeting of Independent Media and SSE will occur from the 9th to the 11th of February 2018 at La Bergerie de Villarceaux (an eco-farm near Paris). \nDuring the UNIVERSSE 2017 – 4th European Social Solidarity Economy (SSE) congress in Athens (9-11 June 2017)\, the “1st European meeting of alternative\, independent\, cooperative media and SSE” took place\, bringing together representatives of around 20 media initiatives from 10 European countries (from Greece to Portugal) and people working in SSE organisations and networks. \nThe participants agreed to work on concrete collaborations\, having a common interest in cooperating together to strengthen each other\, beyond the local and national dimension\, and where possible to network with the solidarity economy (see here a report on the most important points agreed: we are going to work on them during the next meeting). \nAt this second meeting we are planning to deepen on the discussions and work on the next steps to construct a way for working together towards the consolidation of the different initiatives across Europe. \nThe proposed agenda of the meeting is available here. \nThe Swiss-French Foundation FPH is supporting the meeting\, covering the costs of the accomodation and meals for the participants attending to the meeting. \nFrom RIPESS EUROPE

DESCRIPTION:The Ninth Session of the World Urban Forum will be the first session to focus on the implementation of the New Urban Agenda adopted in Habitat III. WUF9 will be instrumental to substantively feed into the inputs for the first report of the implementation of the New Urban Agenda (which are also fully aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals). \nThe New Urban Agenda comes in at a critical moment\, when the first time in history over half of the world’s population is residing in cities. Cities\, if planned and managed well\, will become the main tool for sustainable development and has a potential to be a solution to many of the challenges our planet is facing today. The New Urban Agenda lays out the vision for future cities based on the science of urban development providing tools in crucial areas.
