Scholarships available.\nOn June 22-24\, 2018\, over 700 people across the new economy movement will come together in St. Louis\, MO for CommonBound 2018 to connect with one another\, share our resources\, and demonstrate our power in creating systems that truly meet the needs of our communities. \nIn past years\, CommonBound has answered the questions of what is a new economy\, why do we need one\, and who is it building it. Next July\, CommonBound will connect these threads and focus on another question: How do we build a new economy? \nCommonBound will bring together movement leaders\, activists\, and organizations from across North America to create a space for planning\, strategizing\, and movement building. The conference will feature a combination of network gatherings\, closed and open work/strategy sessions\, trainings\, listening sessions\, workshops\, debates\, and other formats exploring a range of topics through thematic tracks. \nWe’ve learned and built on CommonBound 2016’s decentralized planning model (inspired by the Allied Media Conference). This year\, NEC staff will work with our 200 member groups and allies to curate tracks so that the conference programming is shaped and reflects the communities and thought leaders building the new economy movement. \nCommonBound is taking place in St. Louis\, Missouri\, a city where local organizing is creating a vibrant and burgeoning new economy. NEC is thrilled to partner with Solidarity Economy St. Louis\, a network of St. Louis organizations and individuals\, to plan CommonBound 2018 and ensure it both adds fuel to local organizers’ efforts and grounds visitors in the critical work happening there. \nWe already know that our current economy is built on theft\, exploitation and oppression. Every day\, our communities are faced with an onslaught of violence and repression. Just one month ago\, yet another police officer was acquitted in the murder of Anthony Lamar Smith\, sparking protests from thousands of people across St. Louis. Following the greatest single decline in Black homeownership and wealth in the nation’s history\, many families are struggling. Ro is currently the Educational Director at BRED and is happily spreading the good word of cooperatives in Maryland.\n \nAnnie Sullivan-Chin\, A Bookkeeping Cooperative\nAnnie has been a worker-owner\, bookkeeper\, and consultant at A Bookkeeping Cooperative since 2013. She began her work with ABC as an intern with the Democracy At Work Network\, helping ABC craft its cooperative bylaws and operations protocols. She is now a certified DAWN Peer Advisor\, providing customized technical assistance to worker-owned and democratically-managed organizations throughout the country.\n\n \nFacilitators:\n\n Yvonne Yen Liu\, Solidarity Research Center\nYvonne is the co-founder and research director of Solidarity Research Center\, a worker self-directed nonprofit that advances solidarity economies. She serves on the board of the US Solidarity Economy Network and was named the 2018 Activist-in-Residence Fellow at the UCLA Asian American Studies Center.\n\nParag Rajendra Khandhar\, Asian American Solidarity Economies Project\nParag is a founding principal of Gilmore Khandhar\, LLC\, a law firm focused on legal\, policy\, and advocacy tools to advance economic justice\, racial equity\, and social transformation. He teaches at George Washington University Law School. DESCRIPTION:On May Day\, 2018\, 500 world-changers in philanthropy\, business\, government and citizen activism will gather in San Francisco to foster the emergence of a new regenerative society\, and a rapid shift from a degenerative economy to one that supports the mutual thriving of people and planet. \nACTION OVER DISCUSSION\nReGen18 will not be another talk-fest\, but a task-force and learning ground with growing real-world impact year-on-year. It will launch a purpose-driven community to share practical tools\, powerful ideas\, new business models and innovative finance mechanisms to accelerate the change we need at the speed of the problems we now face. A roster of well-known experts will guide actionable conversations about regenerative finance\, food and agriculture\, urban design and policy\, health and culture. Regenerative companies and projects will gain validation and support. We will build practical partnerships and functional alliances. \nCROSS-POLLINATION\nDynamic event design will maximize productive interaction. Working groups will converge for “deep dives\,” then share their discoveries and activities with the wider gathering. We’ll hear from pioneers who are devising financial products that can combat onrushing climate change while generating prosperity in indigenous communities. We’ll explore how to produce nutritious food and increase biodiversity while “drawing down” CO2 into the living soil. We will meet leaders of regenerative natural products companies and family farms\, and learn about achievable ways to transform landscapes and seascapes. We will explore how cities can enhance the environment rather than depleting it; how buildings can produce clean energy\, air\, and water while storing excess carbon; and how urban transformation connects with local wealth creation through entrepreneurship in marginalized neighborhoods.

SUMMARY:Co-operative Education and Research Conference 2018
DESCRIPTION:The 2018 Co-operative Education and Research Conference takes place on 1-2 May at Federation in Manchester – and will explore what ‘learning to do and learning to be’ look like today. \n“In the 19th Century\, the Rochdale Pioneers asked co-operators to learn how to ‘do’ – so that they could run successful businesses able to compete against capitalist enterprises\, and how to ‘be’– so that they developed values\, behaviours and solidarities essential to making the co-operative economy sustainable\,” said a statement from the Co-operative College\, which organises the event. \nUsing this as a starting point\, the conference will have two main strands: The Co-operative University; and Learning for New Co-operative Times. Over the two days there will be panels discussions\, workshops and the presentation of papers. The College is now calling for proposals that fit in either strand. \nThe idea for a Co-operative University was explored at a session at the 2017 Co-operative Congress\, where Dr Cilla Ross\, Co-operative College vice-principal\, argued that the university as we know it “is in crisis” – and that the establishment of a co-operative university was a logical next step. \nThe Education and Research Conference will continue this debate around co-operative pedagogy and ‘open’ education; co-op learning in communities; and co-op skills for the new world of work. The Learning for Co-operative Times strand will explore the social and solidarity economy; new opportunities for co-operation; and global perspectives\, among others. \nIn an era when the co-operative movement offers an “accountable\, people-centred and values-driven alternative to the mainstream capitalist model”\, the conference will “debate how ready the existing movement is to deal with new challenges”– and will look at the skills needed by people and organisations to develop sustainable\, alternative organisations”. \nIt will also also explore how the co-operative movement “can cope with\, respond to and pre-empt the extraordinary technology-driven changes which are recasting our cultural understanding of how we live\, communicate and work” \nThe deadline for 300 words abstracts is 14 February 2018. Notifications of acceptance will be sent on 7 March 2018. DESCRIPTION:The second European meeting of Independent Media and SSE will occur from the 9th to the 11th of February 2018 at La Bergerie de Villarceaux (an eco-farm near Paris). \nDuring the UNIVERSSE 2017 – 4th European Social Solidarity Economy (SSE) congress in Athens (9-11 June 2017)\, the “1st European meeting of alternative\, independent\, cooperative media and SSE” took place\, bringing together representatives of around 20 media initiatives from 10 European countries (from Greece to Portugal) and people working in SSE organisations and networks. \nThe participants agreed to work on concrete collaborations\, having a common interest in cooperating together to strengthen each other\, beyond the local and national dimension\, and where possible to network with the solidarity economy (see here a report on the most important points agreed: we are going to work on them during the next meeting). \nAt this second meeting we are planning to deepen on the discussions and work on the next steps to construct a way for working together towards the consolidation of the different initiatives across Europe. \nThe proposed agenda of the meeting is available here. \nThe Swiss-French Foundation FPH is supporting the meeting\, covering the costs of the accomodation and meals for the participants attending to the meeting. \nFrom RIPESS EUROPE

DESCRIPTION:How much do you pay for a place to live—and how much should you? Across the country\, housing prices continue to climb while wages essentially have been stagnant since the 1970s. At the same time\, the supply of housing isn’t keeping pace with population growth. Zillow has estimated that the current number of homes for sale is about the same as it was in 1994\, but the U.S. population has grown by 63 million people since then. Even in places with laws requiring developers to build a certain percentage of affordable housing\, “affordability” often applies only to a select few people within a narrow demographic. Most people below the upper middle class are priced out. \nWhere are the solutions? The last major drive toward public housing in the 1960s had wide-ranging effects that did little to alleviate poverty and\, in some places\, made it worse. Across the country\, innovations in housing—cohousing developments and community land trusts to urban mixed-use communities and rural cooperatives—have shown some promise\, but can they scale to address the scope of the problem? There are only 165 cohousing groups across the United States\, for example\, some having only a few homes and none more than a few dozen. And\, no\, a million tiny houses won’t fix us. \nWhat solutions can work at scale? How do we approach housing and the related problems of inequality\, since housing makes up about two-thirds of a median American family’s wealth? How can we provide enough housing without contributing to overdevelopment and environmental degradation in all stages of use? Can innovative solutions in housing address the profound wealth inequality for racial and ethnic minorities? The stories we are seeking will address these questions and more\, such as: \n\nWhat is the American Dream home now?\nShould the goal should be homeownership or long-term stable rentals?\nAre people choosing creative forms of “family” as a way of addressing housing needs?\nIs multigenerational living all it’s cracked up to be?\nHow are communities of color finding solutions to housing needs that also address other issues facing their communities?\nWhat kind of advocacy works to hold the line on raising rents\, foreclosures\, and up-market redevelopment?\nCan cooperative financing\, development\, and homeownership keep housing affordable?\nWhere are millennials finding solutions for first-time homeownership?\nAre rural communities on the rebound as more people abandon prohibitively expensive urban centers?\nIs our concept of “home” changing how we view “work”?\nDoes gentrification have to mean displacement?\nHow can we ensure that our homes—building and living in them—aren’t contributing to environmental decay?\nHow do other countries or cultures manage affordable housing?\nWhat are we going to do about the suburbs?\n\nDo you have expertise\, evidence\, or insight into how the housing economy has changed and how it can change for the better? DESCRIPTION:In January of most years\, the President delivers a State of the Union Address highlighting the past year and suggesting priorities for the coming year. It’s a broadcast from one to many. But democracy is a conversation\, not a monologue. Understanding the state of our union takes We the People reflecting in our own communities on our challenges and opportunities locally\, nationally\, and globally. \nSince 2015\, the USDAC has hosted the People’s State of the Unionas an invitation to supplement the President’s stories by coming together in our own homes\, schools\, houses of worship\, and community organizations to share our own take on the state of our union. Thousands of people in more than 350 communities have taken part over the last three years. \nThe People’s State of the Union has two main parts: Story Circles across the nation\, and a collaboratively composed Poetic Address to the Nation. The USDAC offers toolkits and online trainings to support anyone hosting a Story Circle\, bringing people together to share stories from their own experience. Stories are uploaded to an online story portal where they can be shared and browsed. Then—inspired by these stories—an invited group of writers collaboratively composes the Poetic Address to the Nation\, performed and broadcast live. \nFor #PSOTU 2018\, Story Circle participants are invited to share their own take on the state of our union by reflecting on any of the following prompts (or creating their own): \n\nShare a story about an experience that gave you insight into the state of our union.\nShare a story about a time you felt a sense of belonging—or the opposite—to this nation or your community.\nShare a story of an experience that gave you hope in the past year.\n\nThis year\, Story Circles will take place from January 25-February 4\, 2018. SUMMARY:4th World Forum of Local Economic Development
DESCRIPTION:via RIPESS \nThe 4th World Forum of Local Economic Development (LED) will be held at Praia\, Cabo Verde\, from October 17 to 20\, 2017. After previous meetings in Seville\, Spain (2011)\, in Foz do Iguaçu (Brazil) in 2013 and in 2015 in Turin\, Italy. \nThe theme of this year’s meeting is “Local Economic Development as a comprehensive framework to localize the Sustainable Development Goals: addressing rising inequalities“. \nThe theme of the event is totally aligned with a recent announcement by the UN Secretary General António Guterres of the importance of localizing the 2030 Agenda. \nIn 2014\, even before the adoption of the 2030 SDG’S\, in a position paper published by the UN Taskforce\, the 19 UN Agencies involved explicitly recognized the potential of the ESS for sustainable development. Chapter 3 of this document clearly specifies the importance of ESS for LED: \nSSE provides a vision of local development that proactively regenerates and develops local areas through employment generation\, mobilizing local resources\, community risk management and retaining and reinvesting surplus. SSE can serve to widen the structure of a local economy and labour market and addressing unmet needs with various goods and services. It can build trust and social cohesion and play an important role in participatory local governance. SSE principles can introduce added value within the sectors in which they operate owing to SSE’s compatibility with local interests and its capacity to pursue simultaneously several objectives. \nRIPESS decided to get involved last November 4 at the Symposium organized by the Taskforce in Rome. For RIPESS\, LED is important since SSE is rooted in local communities and we fully agree that the SDG’s need to be implemented at the local level. \nSince January\, we have worked with Jacinto Santos from Cape Verde to develop the SSE and LED approach. Jacinto Santos is a member of the national organising commission of the 4th Forum and in 2016\, was host to a first Portuguese speaking SSE conference. A network was created at that occasion. \nRIPESS is also actively working with UN Taskforce Agencies involved as a partner of the 4th Forum\, in particular UNDP and the ILO to assure that the potential of SSE\, one of the six sub-themes of the Forum\, is fully recognized to implement the SDG’s. RIPESS will be an Associate partner for the Forum. \nRIPESS is planning to be represented at the preparatory regional event in Bolivia in June and in a Symposium in July in Cape Verdi to prepare SSE organisations for October.

SUMMARY:Sixth International Gathering of The Workers' Economy
DESCRIPTION:The VI International Gathering of “The Workers’ Economy” will take place in Argentina between August 30 and September 2\, 2017. An opening event will be held at the worker-recuperated Hotel BAUEN in the City of Buenos Aires\, and the rest of the gathering will continue at the facilities of the Textil Pigüé Cooperative\, a worker-recuperated factory in the interior of the province of Buenos Aires. We invite the participation of all workers from recuperated and self-managed enterprises\, cooperatives and social and popular economy organizations\, as well as trade unions and academics interested in and committed to self-management practices and the project of a new workers’ economy. \nThis new\, sixth edition of the International Gathering of “The Workers’ Economy” will take place ten years after the first edition was organized by the Programa Facultad Abierta (Open University Program) of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Buenos Aires in July 2007. Subsequent editions have taken place in Buenos Aires (2009)\, Mexico (2011)\, Brazil (Joao Pessoa\, 2013) and Venezuela (Punto Fijo\, 2015). Beginning in 2014\, regional gatherings have also been taking place in South America\, Europe and the Mediterranean\, and North and Central America\, the last of which were held in October and November 2016 with the participation of representatives from 30 countries. \nThis new International Gathering will be held at a particular juncture when a workers’ economy based on self-management appears more and more as an alternative to savage capitalism. This is particularly so given that our contemporary capitalist order increasingly condemns the majority of the world’s working people to exploitation\, precariousness\, and unemployment\, while unleashing wars\, discrimination and destruction throughout the planet. In Argentina\, where the sixth edition of the gathering of “The Workers’ Economy” will take place\, one of the world’s most extensive experience of self-management and workers’ recuperations of shops and factories faces a new neoliberal offensive. From there\, at this critical moment\, we invite you to participate in this new edition of the International Gathering of “The Workers’ Economy\,” which intends to bring together and expand on the numerous debates\, discussions\, and shared experiences of the three most recent regional and earlier International Gatherings\, while also aiming to strengthen the organization of our growing world network. \nIn addition to the sessions that will begin on August 30\, the VI International Gathering’s local organizing committee is planning activities and visits to social organizations and worker-recuperated companies in Buenos Aires one week prior to the gathering. SUMMARY:Institute for Advanced Trouble-making 2017
DESCRIPTION:The Institute for Advanced Trouble-making is a week-long anarchist theory and action summer camp. Camp will take place from August 11th – 18th\, 2017 in Worcester\, MA. \nWe are a small collective of long time anarchist organizers seeking to create a lasting movement education hub in the Northeast of the so-called US. The I.A.T. seeks to train new and old organizers alike beyond the basics in anarchist theory\, anti-oppression\, direct action tactics and strategic movement building. \nThe I.A.T. aims to raise collective capacity to target our enemies at the systemic level with effective direct action and campaign work. As Trump’s presidency spurs a swell of anarchist organizing and renewed interest in anti-state anti capitalist perspectives\, we want to escalate by building skills in direct action\, creating movement infrastructure\, and community organizing for new anarchists. We also want to bring experienced organizers together to innovate strategies and tactics for our contemporary context. Rather than an activism 101\, our intention is to cultivate deeper understanding and praxis of anarchist organizing among people who are already doing some of that work. \nIn part we are inspired by long lasting radical education projects such as the IWW associated Work People’s College (1907-1941)\, Movement for New Society’s ‘Life Centers’ (1971-1988)\, the Highlander Folk School (1932-present)\, and the Institute for Social Ecology (1974-present). These examples are notable largely for drawing organizers together in order to innovate tactics and strategies for their context- tools that were intentionally injected broadly into radical movement work. These longer form education projects are also notable for their alumni largely remaining life long radicals. \nWhile informal education spaces\, campaign based action camps\, and book fairs are important elements of our struggle they have serious limitations as well. By creating longer form 1-4 session courses the I.A.T hopes to give space and time to go in depth on contemporary anarchist analysis\, theory\, and concrete movement building skills. The I.A.T. is a move towards creating a more rigorous exploration of anarchism that is: \n\nOutside of the purity of radical internet culture\nContemporary to our context\nRooted in social anarchist principles\nDirectly linked to movement struggle
