DESCRIPTION:Summer Institute 2017 | July 30th – August 5th | Amherst College\nAn intensive residential training\nABOUT | COST & SCHOLARSHIPS | APPLY | FLYER \n\nHow have the economic structures of global capitalism helped to shape our current moment?\nHow do the structures of global capitalism currently function?\nHow can we marshal our understanding into building dignified lives for all?\n\nABOUT \nWe’re living in a global moment of reactionary backlash: fear mongering about immigration\, refugee crises\, climate change denial\, rising nationalism and conservative protectionism. These processes occur against the backdrop of increasing inequality\, division\, and conflict across the globe. At Summer Institute 2017\, we’ll explore the economic structures which have shaped this moment\, and how we can build alternative forms of global economic integration and solidarity. \nOur Summer Institute is a residential\, week long intensive training in economics for activists\, educators\, media makers\, and anyone who wants a better understanding of how the economy works. This year’s special track will offer economic tools and analysis to understand neoliberalism; ‘free’ trade agreements; movements of money\, people\, and goods; economic and military imperialism; and global environmental injustice. We will also explore existing and proposed alternatives for fairer trade and migration systems and equitable solutions to climate change. \nOur analysis takes us beyond harmful myths and tropes\, from ‘they take our jobs\,’ to the notion that jobs come at the expense of the environment\, allowing us to build the broad-based solidarity this moment calls for. Our participatory curriculum is led by staff economists from the Center for Popular Economics\, and the format will allow you to benefit from the rich knowledge and experience of other participants. No background in economics is necessary! \nCOST & SCHOLARSHIPS \nThe full cost of tuition is $900\, which includes housings and meals. DESCRIPTION:Immigrant-led worker cooperatives have been a successful tactic for migrant communities to build power\, build wealth\, and develop member-leaders. However\, the recent political situation is a reminder that migrant workers and other communities remain vulnerable to injustice and disempowerment. This is a call to action to extend protection and safety to all communities facing harassment and persecution in the workplace\, including all people of color\, immigrants\, Muslims\, and people with disabilities. This session will define what expanding sanctuary means\, how this strategy has been utilized over time to create safe and hate-free spaces for everyone\, in particular\, those being persecuted for their immigration status. We will share a new resource guide that has been recently launched by the USFWC and DAWI in collaboration with Urban Justice Center\, where people can obtain information about their rights as worker-owners within the workplace and as individuals/families

SUMMARY:Learning SSE From the Continents
DESCRIPTION:Starting from June 2017\, Pacific Asia Resource Center (PARC) which is a member of ASEC/RIPESS-Asia based in Japan\, will host a webinar series “Learning SSE from the Continents“. \nWhat is it that comes across between movements in EU\, Africa\, Latin America\, North America\, Asia and Japan? \nIn spite of the divers socio-economic situations that these places face\, there is yet a growing movement of social solidarity economy that has something in common. What exactly is the vision that we all share? What are some of the challenges that are shared\, and how can we all work in solidarity; overcoming the contextual differences that we face. \nThis webinar series is aimed at finding hints to these questions by bringing aboard leading SSE practitioners/activists from EU\, North America\, Africa\, Latin America and Asia and listening to the state of SSE movements in their respective continents\, sub-regions\, or specific countries. Most of them are working closely for the Ripess continental network they are belonging to. \nThe aim is to broaden our standing of SSE by understanding better the circumstances of the respective territories and through that to better grasp the Global Vision of SSE that RIPESS has drafted. \nSpeakers will speak to audiences in Japan through video conferencing software\, and consecutive interpretations will be offered only into Japanese from the speakers’. In addition\, some of the speakers will be speakers from Japan who will be only speaking to those physically present in the venue in Tokyo\, Japan. \nHowever\, international participants are welcome to join the webinars through video conferencing software to listen into the speakers give their lectures. SUMMARY:Second Financing For Development Forum
DESCRIPTION:The second FfD Forum will be convened by the President of ECOSOC from 22 to 25 May 2017 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. \nBuilding on the inaugural FfD Forum\, which devoted particular attention to setting up the monitoring framework for the follow-up to the Addis Ababa Action Agenda (Addis Agenda)\, the 2017 Forum is expected to provide impetus for the implementation of FfD outcomes and the delivery of means of implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. \nThe 2017 Forum will begin with the ministerial segment\, which\, on 22 May will feature the Special High-Level Meeting with the Bretton Woods institutions\, the World Trade Organization and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. It will provide an opportunity for the heads of international trade and financial institutions as well as their intergovernmental bodies to interact with their United Nations counterparts on issues of common interest in the follow-up to the FfD outcomes. \nThe ministerial round tables\, to be held on 23 May\, will be the main novelty of the 2017 Forum\, responding to the mandate in the Addis Agenda for the FfD follow-up process to promote the sharing of lessons learned from experiences at the national and regional levels. Each round table would bring together a balanced mix of ministers from developed and developing countries\, as well as high-level officials of international organizations and other stakeholders to share their steps taken towards implementation of commitments contained in the Addis Agenda and other FfD outcomes. \nThe 2017 FfD Forum will also provide the opportunity for Member States to express their views through the general debate. It is expected that the intergovernmentally agreed conclusions and recommendations of the Forum will be adopted at the conclusion of the ministerial segment. \nThe expert segment\, which will take place from 24 to 25 May\, will focus on all seven action areas of the Addis Agenda\, as well as other specific issues that Member States mandated the FfD Forum to address. It will also feature a dedicated panel discussion on the IATF report\, a dialogue with stakeholders\, as well as briefing on progress in initiatives mandated by the Addis Agenda or launched at the Third International Conference on Financing for Development.
